Players get in arguments with refs all the time, but not how Seattle Sounders’ Clint Dempsey did Tuesday against rivals Portland Timbers.

In an intense match against their rivals, Dempsey was awarded a second yellow card after picking up the referee’s notepad and ripping it up and throwing it away.

The game ended in a 3-1 victory for the Timbers, but not without dramatic fashion.

The match was tied one all at the end of 90 minutes before going into extra time. The Timbers scored a second goal, to go up in extra time, before the ref gave the Sounders another yellow card, one to midfielder Micheal Azira who already had one yellow card in the match, thus sending him off for the game.

Mind you, this was the THIRD Sounder to be sent off in the game already.

That was when Dempsey had had enough. He went up to the ref, argued and eventually picked up his fallen notebook on the ground and tore it to shreds while walking towards the sideline, almost knowing he would be sent off.

He definitely walked off in a dramatic fashion, but could be reasonable, because the ref gave out a combination of nine yellow and red cards. A little extreme for one match, and probably one of the reasons the game got out of control to begin with.

The Sounders Twitter page summed up the game perfectly.

Check out the insane send-off below…
